Hotels nowadays are providing many extra facilities to its customers. Well, everybody is feeling the heat of tough competition and hotel business is no different. Free internet service is one of the facilities that customers get as they check into their hotel rooms. Just like any other person checking into a hotel, I too checked in and got the hotel’s Wi-Fi password, but when I tried to access my Bellsouth email over that Wi-Fi network, I was not able to do that. Let me share my experience in detail so that you have a better understanding of the issue as well.
There could be a number of reasons as to why I faced issues while accessing Bellsouth email, and how I was able to fix the issue.
When an email being sent from your email account to your contact’s email ID, it first is delivered to the mail server and after that, it reaches the specific port for communication. Port 25 is a default port for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). This port is going to act as a medium for transferring emails within the servers and to the external PCs tBellSouth Email Settings Outlookhroughout the world.
The curious case of hotels and port 25
Hotels that offer free internet connectivity first intercept the emails that are sent by me through my Bellsouth email and then, forward those emails to the servers for email program requests.
I was aware that my email function is configured according to the SMTP server of my network service provider, but the hotel network sends my email through their own email server to avoid any meddling from spammers.
Why email servers interfere with emails?
What I have understood from all the situation is that someone is keeping a track of my emails. I could be wrong, but I could come across any other reason as to why my emails are going to the email servers of the hotel. I think the hotel Wi-Fi network was unusually protective about its security, which is why every single email that is being sent through hotel IP address were being checked by hotel’s mail servers. They are afraid that if an email is sent from a device that is filled with all sorts of malicious elements, then the hotel address may also be blacklisted.
What I did to solve this problem:
I used a few techniques to fix this problem, which is as below:
- Using webmail: Since my Bellsouth email has its own web interface, so I was able to send my emails through this interface than sending emails through an email client.
- Using an alternate port: I was aware of an alternative port, so I used that instead of port 25. Ports that can be used by SMTP over SSL are 465 or 587, as these ports are protected by SSL connection, so it is not easy to intercept emails sent from these port numbers.
- The settings are going to work everywhere regardless of your my location so I don’t have to change the settings.
- Using VPN service: This is another technique that can be used, as it will protect your mail delivery and also bypass the redirections.
